Real Estate Agent
There are a number of avenues for lodging a complaint about a real estate agent or land valuer.
Each State or Territory's Consumer Affairs / Fair Trading / Consumer Protection department is responsible for licensing of estate agents in that State/Territory. See contact information for your state below.
(2) Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC)
The ACCC can deal with breaches of the Trade Practices Act 1974. For example, you may think that you've been deceived or misled by a real estate agent. For more information about the Trade Practices Act 1974 and the ACCC, click here.
"Fair and Square: A guide to the Trade Practices Act for the real estate industry".
This publication was written for the real estate sector by the Small Business Unit of the ACCC, in consultation with the real estate industry. It covers familiar market situations under which the Trade Practices Act applies to real estate agents. A useful publication for consumers also. It's on the ACCC site here.
(3) Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA)
The REIA has a Code of Ethical Conduct that it recommends to its State bodies. Members must adhere to the Code or face penalties or have their membership revoked. A copy of the Code can be found on the web site of the REI Victoria here . If you have a complaint about the behaviour of a member of the Real Estate Institute you can lodge a complaint with the appropriate State or Territory office. See contact information for your state below.
